Argentine Lawyer Detained in Brazil for Racist Gesture Returns Home

Argentine lawyer Agostina Páez, who was detained in Brazil for making racist gestures, will return to the country this Wednesday, accompanied by lawyer Carla Junqueira after paying a bail of $18,500. According to the Argentine News Agency (NA), Páez will depart from Brazilian soil at 15:55 and arrive in Argentina at 19:20, after being detained for over two months on charges of 'racial insult', an offense recently incorporated into Brazilian legislation that provides for sentences of up to 15 years in prison. The young woman was arrested after an incident in a bar where she was filmed making gestures simulating a monkey in front of employees. The video went viral on social media and generated strong condemnation, leading to her detention by local authorities. During her stay in Brazil, Páez remained under preventive custody while the case against her progressed, a process that included the intervention of her defense and judicial negotiations that ultimately allowed for the payment of a bond to regain her freedom. Her release was secured after the Brazilian justice system accepted the bail payment, enabling the accused to leave the country and return to Argentina, although the judicial process against her will continue. The case has had repercussions in both Argentina and Brazil against a backdrop of a growing crackdown on discrimination laws in the neighboring country, where such conduct is considered a serious crime. Additionally, in a conversation with NA, the 29-year-old from Santiago del Estero expressed feeling 'a lot of anxiety' because she was 'overwhelmed, anxious, and saturated' by the situation.
