Third Week of University Strike Begins in Argentina

Buenos Aires, March 30 (NA) – This Monday, March 30, the third week of the national university strike begins, with the aim of raising awareness for the immediate application of the Funding Law, approved by Congress last year, which includes a larger budget for the operation of all universities. According to the Argentine News Agency, the work stoppage, driven by the two majority national federations represented in Conadu Histórica and Conadu, also seeks to achieve salary recomposition, as all unions report a 'significant lag' due to inflation. In line with this, during the first days of March, professors from the UBA presented a salary evolution report, highlighting that the real salary 'is at its historic low': 35.6% below November 2023 and even 2.7% 'below the worst levels reached in 2004'. Until Tuesday, March 31, various faculties will remain closed due to their adherence to the day of struggle. The National University of Luján (UNLu), among others, will hold a week of faculty and non-faculty strike from March 30 to April 4 'in defense of public university and for dignified salaries'. Likewise, staff from the National University of La Plata (UNLP), through the Professors Association (ADULP), voted on forceful measures that will take place throughout this week. On the other hand, rallies are expected in the vicinity of different university headquarters and possible marches, within the framework of the struggle plan for educational funding, however, there are no confirmed times, places, or dates yet.
