Former Judge María del Carmen Roqueta Passes Away

Buenos Aires, March 29 (NA) — Former judge María del Carmen Roqueta passed away this Sunday. Her remains will be farewelled this same Sunday at Casa América, Acevedo 1120 (from 8 PM to 1 AM). Roqueta presided in 2012 over the tribunal that sentenced Jorge Rafael Videla to 50 years in prison for the systematic plan to steal babies. She was also the president of the court that sentenced Alfredo Astiz and the Tiger Acosta to life imprisonment in 2011, which was one of the first strong sentences after the reopening of human rights trials. Roqueta was a university professor and always played a leading role in the fight for human rights. Among her last public appearances was her participation in a commemorative event for the 10th anniversary of the ESMA Site of Memory Museum on May 31, 2025. In June 2025, she gave reflections on the trials of Operation Condor at a Regional Human Rights Encounter.
