Eleonora Wexler on Cultural Destruction and the Search for Resilience

Ahead of the premiere of "The State of the Union," actress Eleonora Wexler discussed the state of Argentine culture, the lack of national fiction, and the importance of long-term relationships. She called for artists to unite in the face of crisis.

Actress Eleonora Wexler stated that in the artistic landscape there has been a great "destruction" due to "ignorance," but she advocates for collective resilience: "We need to get together and move forward." Ahead of the premiere of "The State of the Union," she spoke with the Argentine News Agency, highlighting the production she will star in alongside actor Gonzalo Heredia, who also co-adapted the play with writer Andrea Garrote based on the text by British author Nick Hornby. With her own recognizable histrionism, the multifaceted Eleonora looks forward "happily" to the premiere of this work and to embodying Ana Laura—her character—who is in a marriage "going through a moment of revision, with a crisis after 15 years together and a family." "It's also about the growth of each of them, where dreams haven't come true," she added. When asked about the defunding of the National Institute of Theatre (INT) and other government measures towards culture, she said: "Well, imagine. The possibilities for everyone have closed in an impressive way. We are left with very few alternatives to create anything, considering there is no help at all." She also added that something evidently was not working within those state spaces either. "I feel privileged, but imagine how the industry is: there is very little work. We have to meet, talk, and see what we do. Nothing more than that," the actress concluded. "The State of the Union" can be seen, starting from next April 3, from Friday to Sunday, at 8:00 p.m., at the Picadero theatre.
