Argentine Deputies Demand Explanations for WHO Withdrawal

A group of Argentine lawmakers has introduced a resolution demanding the government provide legal and health justifications for leaving the WHO and assess the impact on the national health system, urging parliamentary intervention.

Argentine Deputies Demand Explanations for WHO Withdrawal

Buenos Aires, March 19 (NA) – A group of national deputies from the 'United Provinces' bloc introduced a resolution project that demands the Executive Branch report on the legal, health, and institutional grounds for the decision to withdraw Argentina from the World Health Organization (WHO), and to present an evaluation of the consequences this measure could have on the national health system. Through this initiative, to which the Argentine News Agency had access, the signatory legislators expressed 'deep concern' over the government's decision to leave the multilateral body and asked the National Congress to intervene before the measure is finalized. The project is led by Buenos Aires deputy Pablo Julian and also includes Córdoba deputies Juan Schiaretti, Carlos Gutiérrez, Carolina Basualdo, Ignacio García Aresca, Alejandra Torres, and Juan Brügge, among others. The authors of the initiative recalled that Argentina has been a member of the WHO since its founding in 1948 and 'leaving it would mean being left out of international epidemiological surveillance networks, scientific cooperation, and technical assistance in public health, in a world where diseases do not recognize borders.' Furthermore, they emphasized that 'a decision of this magnitude cannot be unilaterally resolved by the Executive Branch' since 'the National Constitution attributes to Congress the power to approve or discard treaties with international organizations.' 'If entry required parliamentary approval, exit must also pass through Congress. This is not a technicality: it is the separation of powers,' they remarked.
