University of Buenos Aires Honors Alejandro Dolina with Doctorate

The University of Buenos Aires resolved to grant the Doctorate Honoris Causa, its highest academic distinction, to writer, musician, composer, radio host, and actor Alejandro Dolina, 81, in recognition of his cultural career and his contribution to thought and artistic production in Argentina. The decision was approved by the university's Higher Council, whose considerations highlight the author's intellectual journey, who studied disciplines such as Literature, History, and Music and developed an extensive literary and media work over several decades. Among his best-known books are 'Chronicles of the Grey Angel' and 'Footnotes', works that over time have become references in contemporary Argentine literature for their particular combination of humor, philosophical reflection, and fantastic narrative. The recognition was promoted from the Faculty of Social Sciences by Vice-Dean Diego de Charras, along with the director of the Communication Social career, Larisa Kejval, and the director of the Political Science career, Miguel De Luca. In the resolution, the UBA also lists some of the distinctions Dolina received throughout his career, including the Konex Diploma of Merit in 1991, four Argentores Awards, the Reader's Prize of the Buenos Aires International Book Fair in 2013, and the Martín Fierro de Oro in 2022. Among other projects, he was creator, screenwriter, and protagonist of the television cycle 'Remembering the Alejandro Molina Show' (2011), in addition to participating in various programs and audiovisual productions. The Higher Council's resolution also recalls the tribute paid in his childhood neighborhood with the inauguration of the 'Grey Angel Walkway' in Caseros in August 2014, a space dedicated to celebrating the narrative universe built by the author. With this distinction, Dolina joins an extensive list of personalities recognized by the University of Buenos Aires for their contribution to culture, thought, and public life. Among them are writer Ernesto Sábato, Italian semiotician Umberto Eco, American linguist Noam Chomsky, German philosopher Jürgen Habermas, and Italian historian Carlo Ginzburg. In the field of music and popular culture, the composer Charly García, the Spanish singer-songwriter Joaquín Sabina, the pianist and orchestra director Daniel Barenboim, and the humorous-musical group Les Luthiers have also been distinguished, as well as figures linked to human rights and political thought such as Estela de Carlotto and Argentine philosopher Ernesto Laclau. By granting the Doctorate Honoris Causa, the UBA recognizes in Dolina a figure who for decades built a singular work, capable of crossing literature, radio, and music with a philosophical and popular gaze at the same time.
