Argentina requests 24 years in prison for drug cartel leader

The Attorney General's Office No. 6 before the Oral Courts in Federal Criminal Law of the Federal Capital has requested 24 years in prison for Fernando “Piti” Estrada Gonzales, considering him the leader of an organization that trafficked drugs in Villa 1-11-14 in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Bajo Flores. According to Noticias Argentina agency through the Fiscales portal, Estrada Gonzales led a band that, between 2009 and 2023, was responsible for the introduction, storage, packaging, and distribution of marijuana, cocaine, and their derivatives. The accused commanded the organization along with his brother Marco, who in 2020 was sentenced to 17 years in prison for his role as leader. This sentence was unified with a previous conviction and extended to 24 years. Estrada Gonzales was a fugitive from October 2010 until early 2023, when he surrendered at the headquarters of the Prosecutor's Office for Narcocriminality (PROCUNAR). From the prosecutor's office, they indicated that this organization was investigated in different cases and highlighted that among all the processes, there are about 180 people convicted for their participation in the criminal band. Additionally, it was mentioned that the Estradas imposed their authority through violence and that for this reason, in these types of cases, neighbors feared to testify for fear of reprisal.
