The government of Javier Milei enacted Law 27801, known as the new Juvenile Penal Regime, via Decree 138/2026, published in the Official Gazette this morning. According to the Argentine News Agency, the main modifications include a lowering of the age of criminal responsibility, accompanied by the creation of a new system of graduated penalties. However, within the framework of a complex 'parliamentary negotiation' with dialogist blocs, the Executive agreed to raise the floor to 14 years in order to unblock political consensus and secure the necessary votes for the bill's passage in the Chamber of Deputies. With this modification, the government secured the support of key allies such as PRO and UCR. This system considers both the minor's age and the particularities of the context in which the crime was committed. During the extraordinary session on February 27, the Senate approved the initiative with 44 votes in favor and 27 against.
