Buenos Aires, March 8 (NA) – Diplomat and former ambassador to China, Diego Guelar, warned of the risk for Argentina amid the conflict in Iran, emphasizing that “we are committed” due to the country's “unconditional” alliance with the United States and Israel. According to the Argentine News Agency, in a dialogue with the Dicen que dicen program on Radio Rivadavia, Guelar analyzed the outbreak and implications of the dispute in the Middle East, stating that the confrontation “intensifies every day and with each passing day there is a greater risk for the entire world, including us in Argentina.” In this sense, he encouraged that “we are not far from the conflict, we are on the front line of the unconditional allies of the United States and Israel at this moment,” exposing that “we are committed, do not believe that this does not affect us or that it affects us from afar.” Referring to the position of President Javier Milei's government, the diplomat stated that “I do not believe in alignment, but in belonging” and affirmed that “Argentina is, without a doubt, a Western country, which implies having the freedom to agree and disagree.” Along the same lines, he insisted that “alignment is not the answer; yes, to consolidate our participation as important members of the Western community, but that is not uncritical, it is not unconditional, because it is not the Western characteristic.” Regarding the possibility of an Iranian regime retaliation outside the conflict zone, he indicated that “Iran has had cells in Europe, in Latin America for many years, which we have experienced” and noted that “we will see if it now has the capacity to respond in other latitudes or not, it has demonstrated it in the past.” In this context, he expressed that “from extremism, one can only expect more extremism, not sanity,” ensuring that “it would be very strange for 45 years of a criminal, extremist, ultra-religious regime to suddenly show signs of sanity.” Regarding the handling of the conflict by U.S. President Donald Trump, Guelar questioned the changes in the president's decisions about the attack on Iran, pointing out that “it is the expression of this period in the world, which is chaos” and adding that “it is not a new order, but a chaos led by the most chaotic of all.” With this context, he mentioned the recent Israeli-American attacks on Iranian oil infrastructure and focused on the reaction of the markets with the surge in energy prices, ensuring that “beyond the justice of fighting the ayatollahs, there is a distortion that the world pays for in violence, in oil, in gas” and emphasized that “no one knows where, when, or how this conflict will end.” As an expression of desire, Guelar stated that “it would be very good for Iran to have a cohabiting, non-violent, and non-dictatorial regime,” considering that “it would make a great contribution to peace in the Middle East and in the world, without a doubt.” However, he sowed doubts about the feasibility of that possibility under the leadership of the U.S. president, expressing that “if Trump's methodology leads to that, it will be welcome; but when one unleashes a war, there are desired and undesired effects, and today we cannot measure that in any way.”
