Transgender Marriage in Argentina Declared Null

Buenos Aires, February 18 (NA) – The marriage between Isabel Díaz Núñez and Solange Ayala, celebrated in Corrientes, has been declared null by the Archbishopric of that province. The couple married on January 28th in the parish of Nuestra Señora de Pompeya in the capital. The ceremony was conducted under the names on their identity documents, not their baptismal names. The parish priest informed Díaz Núñez and Ayala that there were no impediments to the wedding, as from a biological standpoint, they are 'a man and a woman.' However, on February 8th, the Archbishop of the province, Monsignor José Adolfo Larregain, issued a statement asserting that he did not authorize the marriage and did not receive the necessary ecclesiastical documents. He further emphasized that the case should be considered 'ipso facto' null and void for not adhering to canon law.
