Argentine Government Extends Sessions and Presents New University Financing Law

The Argentine Government will extend the extraordinary sessions until February 28 and add the sending of a new University Financing Law to compensate for the demands of the higher education institutions. According to the Argentine News Agency (NA), the decree containing the decision will be signed tonight and will be published in the Official Gazette next Monday. 'The idea of the law is to make it implementable,' said an important source. The truth is that the decree seeks to appease the university sector, whose authorities demand a budget update for the correct functioning of the higher houses of study. The Executive's decision comes after the filing of an amparo remedy before the Federal Administrative Litigation Chamber to stop the mandatory implementation of the University Financing Law passed in 2024. After the sanction of both chambers, President Javier Milei vetoed it, but finally the Congress ratified what was discussed. Although the rules of the Chamber of Deputies establish that the extension of the agenda must be voted in the chamber, in the Casa Rosada they rely on precedents for the incorporation of projects carried out by this means. The decree will also formalize the extension of the deadline for extraordinary sessions until February 28 to advance with the sanction of the schedule before the Opening of Ordinary Sessions, scheduled for March 1. In addition, it will comply with the norm that establishes that at least 10 days must pass to issue an opinion.
