Argentine Deputy Supports Lowering Age of Criminal Responsibility

On Thursday, deputy Ramiro Gutiérrez of Unión por la Patria distinguished himself from the rest of Peronism and, in line with the historical stance of the Renovador Front, supported lowering the age of criminal responsibility to 14. However, he clarified that he disagrees with the new Juvenile Criminal Code promoted by the government. "I believe that a person who has made the decision to harm, injure, or kill at age 14 understands that it is wrong and must face consequences," stated the member of the Renovador Front and the UxP bloc. For the legislator, "the problem must be solved, and solving it is the creation of a Juvenile Criminal Code, which today is a major omission because we come from a military-era project that has not given any response to society." As the author of an alternative opinion signed by most representatives of Unión por la Patria, he said that "crime must have consequences, and one should not get angry at the problem." As Gutiérrez clarified, "the project signed by the massist deputies differs substantially from the one presented by the Executive Branch." "It's not about lowering the age of criminal responsibility and nothing more. It is the creation of a comprehensive regime that contemplates all possibilities."
