Former Argentine Official Detained in Corruption Case

Buenos Aires, February 11 (NA) – Claudio Uberti, former head of the Road Concessions Control Body (Occovi), was detained by judicial order after the supreme court left firm the conviction against him in the cause known as the “Antonini Wilson suitcase”.On the former official there was an arrest request and he was at the disposal of Justice by disposition of Judge Sabrina Namer, who substitutes in the Oral Court in Economic Criminal No. 1 and is in charge of the execution of the penalty.According to what the Argentine News Agency could find out, the case dates back to the early morning of August 4, 2007, when Venezuelan businessman Guido Alejandro Antonini Wilson tried to enter the country with a suitcase containing US$790,550 in cash, in 50-dollar bills, without declaring it to Customs.Antonini Wilson had arrived at Aeroparque on a private flight along with Uberti, Argentine officials and Venezuelan citizens linked to PDVSA, within the framework of management related to energy contracts and infrastructure works. The money was detected during a security control by means of a scanner operated by airport personnel, despite attempts to avoid a thorough inspection. When consulted, Antonini Wilson initially stated that he was transporting “books and papers”, then said he was carrying some US$60,000, but when opening the suitcase it was found that the amount was much higher.Subsequently, the businessman —who remains a fugitive— declared before the US FBI that the money was intended for the financing of the Kirchnerism's electoral campaign.__IP__Uberti is also one of the repentants in the cause of the notebooks of bribes, where he confessed to having moved suitcases with money collected from road concessionaires to deliver to Néstor Kirchner, and maintained that Cristina Kirchner knew those maneuvers. The Supreme Court, with the signatures of Horacio Rosatti, Carlos Rosenkrantz and Ricardo Lorenzetti, rejected the last defense's claim for formal issues, which left the conviction firm and enabled his immediate detention and effective fulfillment of the penalty.
