FOPEA criticizes the creation of the 'Official Response Office' in Argentina

The Argentine Journalism Forum (FOPEA) expressed deep concern over the creation of a new official X social media account by the presidential administration, named the "Official Response Office". The authorities stated that the goal of this platform is to "actively deny lies" and "expose operations".

The organization warned of the institutional danger posed by the state creating a sort of "truth tribunal." FOPEA noted that it is particularly alarming that this initiative was announced via the official press channel of the presidency. The group argues that the state is obligated to guarantee freedom of expression and access to information, not to audit public discourse or harass those who practice journalism.

FOPEA stated that while journalism is subject to criticism, no official authority should shut down public debate, as this invalidates opposition and undermines freedom of expression. The government's attempt to establish an indisputable "official truth" clashes with the essence of a free society.

The use of official structures and public resources to monitor and stigmatize dissent or critical journalism was also criticized. The statement emphasized that a journalist's primary commitment is the pursuit of truth through professional rigor and fact-checking, rather than the imposition of dogma.

This situation is exacerbated by the government restricting access to information sources through decree changes, discontinuing regular press conferences, and reducing coverage of the presidential press office. FOPEA recalled that throughout its 23-year history, it has expressed concern regarding similar initiatives by previous governments.
