The Executive Branch of Argentina has ordered the transfer of the Corvo Saber of General Don José de San Martín from the National Historical Museum to the headquarters of the Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo General San Martín. There, the historical symbol will remain under the permanent custody of the military unit created by the Liberator himself. This measure, which was accessed by the Noticias Argentina news agency, was formalized through Decree 81 of 2026, published today in the Official Gazette. The decree establishes that the historical symbol will be relocated to Avenida Luis María Campos 554 in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, where the Regiment will be responsible for its preservation, security, and integrity in accordance with applicable norms and protocols. The Corvo Saber is part of the historical heritage of the Argentine Nation and constitutes one of the most representative symbols of national sovereignty and the consolidation of independence, as highlighted in the decree's considerations. Although it was recovered on both occasions, those circumstances highlighted the need to adopt measures to strengthen its protection, security, and proper institutional safeguarding. Consequently, through Decree 8,756 of 1967, its definitive custody and care were entrusted to the Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo General San Martín, a unit created by the Liberator himself as a decisive instrument of independence and the bearer of a historical tradition of honor, discipline, and service to the Fatherland. Through Decree 843 of 2015, its transfer to the National Historical Museum for its permanent exhibition had been established, remaining under the custody of the Grenadiers. The new measure expressly repeals that decree and orders the return of the symbol to the military headquarters. The Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo General San Martín, since its creation, was in charge of the custody of the Supreme Chief of the Nation and the most relevant symbols of Argentine history, constituting an expression of the institutional continuity that links the origins of the Republic with the present of the National State. The set of buildings that make up the facilities of the Palermo Barracks of the aforementioned Regiment, with its gardens, was declared a National Historical Monument by Decree 1,109 of 1997 and holds a singular historical and institutional significance, as it is directly associated with the figure of the Liberator and the Argentine republican tradition. The artifact was donated to the National State in the year 1897 to ensure its preservation and state custody. According to the grounds of the norm, the Corvo Saber was the subject of illicit acts on two occasions while under the custody of the National Historical Museum, in the years 1963 and 1965.
