Milei denies US talks on deportee agreement

President Javier Milei denied on Friday that the Argentine government is negotiating with the United States an agreement to receive deported immigrants, after media reports linked the White House with the libertarian administration on migration issues. Milei did this through a retweet from analyst Alejandro Sarubbi Benítez, who cited a news article and was categorical: “100% false information.” According to one version, published by The New York Times, the US and Argentina were holding preliminary talks to allow migrants expelled from the US to be sent to Argentine territory, from where they would later return to their countries of origin. According to the same sources, the potential agreement was not yet finalized. As Noticias Argentinas was able to find out, the government itself admits that an initiative of this kind would raise serious objections. Among them are the economic cost, the lack of adequate infrastructure, and the internal political impact, especially in a context of fiscal adjustment and social tensions. Despite this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs avoided commenting on the existence or absence of ongoing negotiations.
