Buenos Aires, Jan. 24 (NA) – Vice President and head of the Senate, Victoria Villarruel, expressed her solidarity over the death of a Falklands War veteran, calling him 'a soldier of the homeland.' Through her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Villarruel stated:

'RIP, Soldier of the Homeland! May the Virgin of Luján always cover you with her mantle!'

The deceased is Modesto Herminio Cárdenas, 63, who passed away last Wednesday, January 7, though the news only broke in recent hours.

The soldier was part of the Infantry Battalion (BIM) No. 5 during the armed conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom, which began on April 2 and ended on June 14, 1982.

Born in the Chubut town of Paso de los Indios and a resident of Trevelín, Cárdenas worked as a rural hand in El Calafate and Cholila, and at the age of 18, he performed his mandatory military service.
