Buenos Aires Obelisk Lit in Venezuelan Colors

Buenos Aires, January 3 (NA) — The Obelisk in Buenos Aires was lit up this morning with the colors of the Venezuelan flag, a political and symbolic gesture of support for the Venezuelan people. This action was accompanied by a public message from Head of Government Jorge Macri, who expressed a strong stance against the Nicolás Maduro regime and in favor of human rights. In an extensive message shared on social media, Macri stated that “the City of Buenos Aires has always been, is, and will always be on the side of freedom” and emphasized that January 3, 2026, “will be marked as a historic day” not only politically but also humanely, representing “the possibility of living without fear.” In this context, the Head of Government denounced that for years, “the Nicolás Maduro dictatorship stripped Venezuela of the most basic and essential thing for a human being: their freedom,” referring to the inability to choose, express oneself, work, and project a life without state control. “In times like this, there is only one correct side of history,” he stressed. The lighting of the Obelisk thus became part of a series of institutional gestures by the City in support of the Venezuelan cause, reaffirming—according to the official message—Buenos Aires's commitment to “freedom, justice, and human dignity,” values that, Macri noted, “mark its history, its present, and its future.” Macri also recalled that Buenos Aires was the destination for thousands of Venezuelans who had to emigrate “fleeing hunger and political persecution.” He also affirmed that in the face of regimes that persecute those who think differently, annul rights, and use terror as a method of subjugation, “neutrality is not possible,” and warned that in such cases, “indifference is complicity.”
