AFA president charged

In Argentina, prosecutors have charged the president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and its treasurer with illegally withholding pension contributions and other taxes. The indictment stems from a complaint by the General Tax Directorate, which claimed unpaid contributions exceeding 19 million dollars over two years. Judge Diego Amarante has taken the case under his jurisdiction.

Fiscal prosecutor Claudio Navas Rial said that due to the AFA's large economic structure and the amounts involved, it is essential to extend the investigation to other board members. The filing indicated that the organization withheld social security contributions and failed to deposit them within the legal deadline, exceeding the statutory threshold for punishment.

The probe examines alleged misappropriations, including VAT, profit tax, and pension contributions, from March 2024 to September 2025. Under Argentine law, offenders can face two to six years in prison for late payments. This is the first of three cases involving AFA’s top leadership.

Other investigations involve financial irregularities tied to Sur Finanzas and the purchase of a luxury property in Pilar, a suburb of Buenos Aires. The AFA has called the probes a "coordinated attack" by the Milei government following a complaint by former Minister of Security, now senator, against Tapia at CONMEBOL. The conflict between the government and AFA has lasted more than a year, sparking disagreement over the proposed model of public‑society ownership.

"Torna indispensable extender la investigación," said Claudio Navas Rial.
