The Argentine Senate approved the 2026 Budget on Friday, December 26. The vote, overseen by Vice President Victoria Villarruel, counted 46 votes in favor, 25 against, and one abstention, after an intense debate among the various benches.

The text includes significant changes, such as allocating 4.8 trillion pesos to universities in Article 12 and eliminating the requirement to devote 6% of GDP to the education sector, as outlined in Article 30. It also sets new conditions for accessing resources and modifies the distribution of investment in science and technology.

"The Budget is not just an economic tool; it is a starting point for rebuilding Argentina's emotional history," said Patricia Bullrich, leader of the La Libertad Avanza bench.

"The first point of the Budget is completely outdated and has nothing to do with the reality we are living in," said José Mayans, head of the Kirchnerista block.

"We cannot look aside and condemn future generations to have no better future," added Maximiliano Abad, UCR senator.

The budget's success opens a new chapter in President Javier Milei's administration, but also presents challenges for fiscal stability and economic growth.
