Argentine Ruling Coalition Aims to Restore Rejected Budget Articles

After a defeat in the Lower House, the ruling coalition is considering amendments in the Senate and a parliamentary reconvening to restore rejected budget chapters, including controversial articles repealing disability and university funding laws.

Argentine Ruling Coalition Aims to Restore Rejected Budget Articles

Following a major setback in the Lower House, where it failed to uphold a key chapter of the 2026 budget bill that included the repeal of emergency disability and university funding laws, the ruling coalition has recalibrated its strategy. It is now considering making changes in the Senate and subsequently reconvening the Lower House on December 29 or 30 to reinstate the articles overturned by the opposition. 'Work will be done on modifications or new specific laws to achieve the same objectives set forth in that chapter,' stated high-ranking sources within the ruling coalition. During this same potential session, the ruling coalition could also address the 'Law of National Commitment for Fiscal and Monetary Balance,' whose consideration was cut short in the last session. Sources clarified that the possibility of reconvening between the holidays, a scenario unthinkable until a few days ago, 'does not depend exclusively on La Libertad Avanza' but on the agreements reached in the Senate. Indeed, the Senate could approve the budget bill as it was passed by the Lower House, which would turn the bill into law (if that happens, could Javier Milei veto his own budget?).
