Buenos Aires, December 19 (NA) — The United Nations Human Rights Council has appointed two new members to the mission tasked with investigating possible crimes against humanity in Venezuela, including Argentine María Eloísa Quintero.

The law specialist was appointed by the President of the Human Rights Council, Jürg Lauber, alongside Canadian Alex Neve, as reported by the Argentine News Agency. Both will replace Chilean Francisco Cox Vial and Argentine Patricia Tappatá Valdez, according to the Argentine Newsweek website.

Quintero, a researcher and teacher, is from the province of Entre Ríos. She holds a doctorate in Law from Austral University and a bachelor's degree in the same field from the National University of Litoral. She is an expert in investigating complex cases with over 25 years of experience; she also works as a teacher in various Latin American countries.

She has led technical and academic teams dedicated to serious human rights violations and criminal cases related to organized crime, corruption, enforced disappearances, human trafficking, migration, money laundering, and other issues.

Recently, she worked in Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, where she collaborated closely with authorities, international organizations, and civil society.

Quintero and Neve will join Portuguese Marta Valiñas on the International Independent Mission to Establish the Facts in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. They will investigate everything that is happening there, now amid tensions with the United States. As the Argentine website (a partner of #AgenciaNA) emphasizes, persecution in Venezuela has been intensifying in recent times.
