Government Appoints New Head of Tax Directorate

The Government has appointed Mariano Mengochea as the new head of the Tax Directorate (DGI), following the appointment of his former head, Andrés Vázquez, to lead the Customs Collection and Control Agency (ARCA), following the departure of Juan Pazo. Mengochea's appointment, effective December 18, was formalized this Wednesday through the publication of Decree 891/2025 in the Official Gazette, completing the changes in the tax agency. The new head of the DGI is an accountant and a close associate of Vázquez, with whom he has worked for years in various tax departments. Additionally, he has served as a lecturer in the Finance and Tax Law course at the University of Lomas de Zamora. Prior to this appointment, Mengochea had been serving as the Deputy General Director of Metropolitan Tax Operations, a position to which he was appointed by Vázquez in October 2024. His rise to the DGI leadership is also linked to his work in the Southern Region of the former Federal Administration of Public Revenue (AFIP) during the Kirchnerist era. For this work, he was named in judicial investigations known as "Vialidad" and "La ruta del dinero K," where the controls over the movements of Lázaro Báez and Cristóbal López were questioned. Before this appointment, Mengochea also worked in the Customs area of La Plata, where he was a Technical Affairs analyst.
