Argentina to Restrict Strikes and Assemblies

Argentina's government seeks to limit union assemblies and impose penalties on unions that block businesses, according to a new labor reform bill.

Argentina to Restrict Strikes and Assemblies

The Argentine government has sent a labor reform bill to the Senate, aiming to limit union assemblies and establish harsh penalties for labor organizations that block businesses. The project defines causing or organizing a blockade as a 'very serious offense,' punishable by sanctions stipulated by regulation, without prejudice to civil and criminal liabilities. Unions will now require prior employer authorization to hold assemblies, specifying the time, duration, and location. Workers will not be paid during the assembly time. The bill also considers it an 'unfair practice' to call assemblies that violate the terms of the law. Furthermore, the initiative allows for the creation of company-level unions and streamlines the process for obtaining their legal status.
