Argentina nominates Rafael Grossi for UN Secretary-General

The Argentine government has officially nominated Rafael Mariano Grossi, current IAEA Director General, as its candidate for UN Secretary-General. This move aims to strengthen the country's international presence and position Grossi as an experienced diplomat capable of uniting the global community in the face of unprecedented challenges.

Buenos Aires, November 26, 2025 – Total News Agency-TNA-The Argentine government formally presented this Thursday the candidacy of Rafael Mariano Grossi for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). This high-impact international diplomatic move seeks to project the prestige achieved by the current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) towards the political leadership of the world's most important multilateral system.

The candidacy was presented by Chancellor Pablo Quirno, who publicly highlighted the trajectory of the Argentine diplomat and his performance in global scenarios marked by nuclear tensions, armed conflicts, and growing risks to international security.

Quirno announced the nomination through a message on social network X, in which he emphasized that Grossi “is internationally recognized for the extraordinary task” he has performed at the head of the IAEA for six years.

Grossi, with over three decades of diplomatic career, experience in multilateral organizations, and cross-cutting recognition in opposing political blocs, appears as a potential consensus figure in a historically complex and power-interest-ridden selection process.

For Argentine diplomacy, the announcement reinforces the intention to project the country onto the international scene with an active presence in global governance.

Argentina bets that Grossi's figure combines professionalism, international respect, and negotiation skills at a time when the international community demands effective leadership in the face of unprecedented challenges.

In this context, Argentina seeks that Grossi's figure represents a balanced alternative, with technical experience and diplomatic capacity to build bridges between opposing countries in the world's main conflicts.

The candidacy also responds to a broader geopolitical movement: recent mandates at the Secretariat have been dominated by figures from Europe and the Lusophone world, which opens the possibility for Latin America to aspire again to the leadership of the organization after decades without representation at that level.

His leadership, considered firm and technically impeccable by multiple governments, has positioned him as a respected figure both in the West and in non-aligned regions.

For the Argentine government, promoting his candidacy is a strategic bet in a context where the UN is facing profound questions regarding its capacity to respond to global crises.

During that period, the Argentine diplomat led the agency at critical moments such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the protection of nuclear installations in war zones—including the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant—, verifications in Iran and North Korea, and the expansion of the peaceful use of nuclear energy in developing countries.
