Argentine Commission Calls for Investigation into President over Cryptocurrency Promotion

Buenos Aires, November 18 (NA) -- The special investigative commission into the Libradio cryptocurrency today presented its final report and urged Congress to evaluate President Javier Milei for alleged "malfeasance in office". The investigative commission determined that the public promotion that President Javier Milei carried out in February 2025 from his verified official X account was a necessary condition for the "scam," the "ruse," and the "deception" of thousands of investors to be consummated.

Investigation Details The document, 204 pages long, which was accessed by the Argentine News Agency, contains considerations on the political responsibility of the president and other high-ranking officials, a description of the network in which lobbyists and intermediaries such as Mauricio Novelli and Manuel Terrones Godoy participated. The report stated that Milei and these same two individuals had already been part of three other very similar operations with cryptocurrencies. In this sense, the report points out that "the promotion of the $LIBRA project was not an isolated fact, since in December 2024 a similar financial maneuver linked to the digital currency of KIP Protocol was registered, in which the President of the Nation also participated with its promotion", just as had previously happened with other cryptocurrencies such as Coin X and Vulcano.

For the opposition deputies who participated in drafting the final document, "the President's statements that he did not know the details of the project and that he simply disseminated public information lack factual support". "This Investigative Commission understands that this fact raises the need for the National Congress, based on the manifest political presidential responsibility evidenced in this report, to evaluate whether the President of the Nation incurred malfeasance in the exercise of his functions," they stated in the final considerations.

«Indeed, from the comprehensive analysis of the evidence gathered, this Commission observes a sustained pattern of actions and omissions on the part of the President of the Nation that is incompatible with the proper exercise of his constitutional duties», the report says. And it adds that «the public promotion of a non-audited crypto token, the inaction in the face of formal warnings, the deliberate omission to activate internal control mechanisms, and the use of official facilities to facilitate meetings with token promoters constitute conduct that exceeds the framework of discretionary decisions and projects onto the institutional responsibility of the Head of State».

«Without the promotion carried out by President Javier Milei on his official account, the $LIBRA project would not have reached the volume of purchases recorded,» they maintained, and also highlighted that to date the head of state has not been able to determine how he obtained the link with the contract number of the Libra token that he published, "even though said information was not of public circulation". According to their complaint, the president did not consult with control agencies before promoting the crypto-asset on his social networks, in such a way that "he compromised the investiture of the presidency in an act that cannot be characterized as of a private nature, evidencing a sustained conduct that blurs the lines between the public and the private".

The Role of Karina Milei They also involved the Secretary-General of the Presidency, Karina Milei, for having authorized entry to the Casa Rosada and the Quinta de Olivos of the businessmen and lobbyists who participated in "an event being investigated as a presumed international-scale scam".
