CGT Elects New Triumvirate Without Kirchnerists

The Argentine General Confederation of Labor (CGT) elected new leadership, sidelining unions linked to Kirchnerism. The new structure delegates power between dialoguers and independents.

The rest of the leadership of the central trade union followed the usual procedure. Andrés Rodríguez of UPCN was re-elected as Adjunct Secretary, and Gerardo Martínez, the head of UOCRA, was re-elected as Secretary of International Relations, a sort of 'Chancellery' of the CGT. However, the outgoing leaders Daer and Carlos Acuña did not leave completely: the former took over the Secretariat of the Interior, and the latter did the same with the Tourism Secretariat. Between the '胖子' (Fats), as the service sector unions are known, and the 'Independents', to whom Andrés Rodríguez and Martínez belong, the cake was divided once again. The UTA, led by Roberto Fernández, disagreed with the triumvirate, which was voted on by a show of hands, which is why the leader left the congress earlier. This does not mean, however, that the union has pulled out of the central organization, according to sources consulted by the agency. Roberto Fernández of the UTA left the meeting. The gastronomic union leader Luis Barrionuevo took the same stance, another of those who called for a return to the traditional model of a single secretary general. What Barrionuevo seems unwilling to understand is that, as in Peronism, unity is impossible and collegiate bodies seem to be the norm. The unions most closely identified with Kirchnerism were displaced from the CGT's leadership table this Wednesday, reflecting the climate of the Peronist era after the defeat of 'Fuerza Patria' in the October 26 elections. When it came to electing a new triumvirate for the central body, the delegates opted for the dialogue sector of Héctor Daer, which placed Jorge Sola in one of the three seats, and for the ever-present Truckers' Union, which has its own weight in union life and for which Octavio Arguello was re-elected. The host, José Luis Lingeri, who received the confederated unions at the Obras Sanitarias stadium, was placed in Social Action. The third place went to Cristian Jerónimo of the Glassblowers' Union, one of the 'new faces' betting on generational change. Unions more closely linked to Kirchnerism, such as La Bancaria, which remains outside the central body, or the UOM, led by Abel Furlán, were left far from the decision-making scheme, although in the latter case the displacement is relative: the metallurgical worker Osvaldo Lobato from San Martín was appointed to the strategic position of Guild Secretary. The possibility of a woman joining the triumvirate also benefited Kirchnerism's chances, especially if the choice had fallen on the leader Vanesa Siley, general secretary of the Judicial Union of the City and close to former President Cristina Kirchner. But that candidacy was not even close to materializing, nor was the election of Maia Volcovinsky, also from the Judicial Union and another candidate mentioned to reduce the gender gap in the central body. 'There had been talk of how to form the triumvirate to include a woman, it was one of the possibilities and was part of the talks,' admitted a CGT leader when consulted by the Argentine News Agency. Head of UPCN, Andrés Rodríguez.
