Various sectors of Argentine society hold President Javier Milei, Minister Patricia Bullrich, and the Head of Government of the City Jorge Macri responsible for ensuring the physical integrity and democratic freedoms of those exercising their legitimate right to protest in public. This call comes after federal security forces and the City Police were accused of violating constitutional rights and guarantees during a demonstration on March 12.
The petition, signed by politicians, artists, human rights organizations, scientists, and journalists, demands that national and local authorities ensure the freedom to protest in an upcoming march of retirees. City legislator Victoria Montenegro, one of the promoters of this initiative, emphasized the importance of denouncing previous incidents and reinforcing the right to free expression in the country.
Another signatory mentioned is Héctor 'el Negro' Enrique, former player of the National Football Team and World Champion, who supports the demand to guarantee the freedom of assembly and protest in the scheduled demonstration for Wednesday, March 19. Additionally, the alleged threats from the state to coerce demonstrators are rejected, and a thorough investigation into the injuries suffered by a photojournalist and several demonstrators in a previous protest is demanded.
Among the personalities and entities that signed the petition are prominent academics, human rights organizations, musicians, writers, journalists, actors, and recognized legislators in Argentina. The diversity of support for this request demonstrates a shared concern for guaranteeing the fundamental right to freedom of expression in the country.
