Today marks 33 years since the Attack on the Israeli Embassy carried out by the terrorist organization Hezbollah. On March 17, 1992, a car bomb struck the Embassy, claiming the lives of 29 people and leaving more than 200 injured. That day, the center of Buenos Aires was flooded with debris, blood, and mourning due to the magnitude of the attack.
In memory of the fatal victims and the wounded, a commemorative event will take place this Monday at the corner of Arroyo and Suipacha, where the Embassy building once stood. Despite the efforts of the Argentine Supreme Court and international organizations such as the FBI and the Israeli Mossad, to date there are no defendants or convictions for this attack.
In April 2024, an Argentine federal court determined the responsibility of Iran and Hezbollah in the attack, pointing to several Iranian politicians and military figures, as well as Argentine officials for attempting to cover up the crime. Patricia Bullrich, Minister of Defense, identified Hussein Ahmad Karaki as the mastermind behind the attacks, designating him as the head of Hezbollah operations in Latin America and responsible for various attacks.
The commemorative event will be attended by the president and executives of AMIA, and it will pay tribute to the fatal victims and survivors, renewing the call for justice. On this day, the aim is to remember the tragedy through the stories of survivors and families, emphasizing the importance that every story deserves to be told.
