The Chamber of Deputies of Argentina approved to summon various commissions of the Lower House to discuss projects related to $LIBRA, the cryptocurrency that caused controversy, including the creation of an investigative committee regarding the role of the president, Javier Milei, and part of his Cabinet in the scandal.
The opposition managed to get the committees to open the debate next week, as none of the projects had a committee report and two-thirds of the votes were needed for their approval in Parliament. One of the projects includes the creation of an investigative commission to analyze Milei's conduct in promoting $LIBRA.
Additionally, requests for reports, both in-person and written, must be approved for several prominent figures such as Milei himself, the president's sister, Karina Milei, the Chief of Staff, Guillermo Francos, the Minister of Justice, Mariano Cáneo Libarona, and the presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni.
Deputy Pablo Juliano stated: "We want to know if on February 14 a dark chapter began to be written," referring to a social media publication by Milei promoting the cryptocurrency, which triggered judicial investigations due to significant fluctuations in the coin's value, harming thousands of investors.
Due to the delay in voting on the summons, Deputy Nicolás Massot mentioned that the president of the Chamber, Martín Menem, a member of La Libertad Avanza, was linked to the matter by retweeting a message from Milei. Massot called for clarification on what happened, and Martín Menem responded that no process related to the issue was being obstructed.
