A self-convened delegation of fans from the Chacarita club joined the protest to support retirees against the repressive threat in the National Congress. Every Wednesday, the protesters hold a peaceful round to denounce miserable pensions and the government’s austerity policies. On this occasion, the Federal Police and the National Prefecture had a strong presence at the mobilization.
On a hot day with power outages that left millions without electricity, traffic in CABA was chaotic and the subways and trains were not operational. Despite this, the government deployed a force to repress the elderly at the Congress. The police attacked the protesters, including retirees and Chacarita fans, with gas and motorcycles, preventing the peaceful round.
Despite the repression, the protesters managed to carry out the round around the Congress for a few minutes. However, the Federal Police continued to harass the retirees and their supporters. Photographers, cameramen, and press workers were also assaulted during the repression. The far-right government of Javier Milei has been criticized for its violent attitude towards protests.
The day of protest concluded with the dispersal of the demonstrators who demanded better conditions for retirees and denounced the government’s austerity. Media workers from Telefé, Channel 9, Página 12, and Revista Cítrica were also affected by the repression. The government deployed a strong operation to limit the right to protest, cutting off traffic and preventing the demonstration from taking place.
