Judge Lijo Nominated to Supreme Court Amid Controversy

Federal judge Ariel Lijo is known for his involvement in sensitive cases, including human rights violations during the last military dictatorship. He stood out for investigating disappearances and torture committed in Battalion 601 of the Army.

In another relevant case, Lijo led the investigation into the assassination of CGT secretary José Rucci, although he did not consider it a crime against humanity. His work earned him recognition from some and disapproval from political figures such as the Vice President of the Nation, Victoria Villarruel.

In addition, during his career, Lijo married Silvia Cavallo, federal prosecutor of Quilmes and sister of federal judge Gabriel Cavallo. He investigated Vice President Amado Boudou in the Ciccone Calcográfica case, which resulted in Boudou's imprisonment after a trial.

Over the years, Lijo has been involved in high-profile cases, including the investigation of irregularities in the AMIA bombing and possible money laundering cases in politics. His brother, Alfredo Lijo, has also been the subject of controversy, leading to accusations from Elisa Carrió of being part of an illicit association to protect De Vido from corruption investigations.

Despite the criticisms, Lijo has managed to maintain alliances within the judicial system, keeping close relationships with renowned colleagues like Judge María Servini and current Supreme Court member Ricardo Lorenzetti. Recently, President Javier Milei announced his intention to appoint Lijo to the Supreme Court by decree, after his nomination was not addressed in the Senate.

Lijo's candidacy has generated both support and challenges, with his declassification of sensitive information related to the AMIA bombing being a point of controversy. Despite this, he received the backing of the Delegation of Israeli Argentine Associations on his path to the Court.
