Justice Demand March for Victims in Buenos Aires

A year ago, on February 8th, a tragic collapse occurred in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Caballito, where a party wall from a construction site affected a nearby residence, resulting in the deaths of two siblings, Ramón Muñoz, 77 years old, and Nélida, 75. This incident left 14 people assisted, including four minors, while eight other workers remained unharmed.

Since then, the neighboring buildings have remained in precarious and dangerous conditions, with no effective measures taken to resolve the situation. The Victim Assistance Department had previously requested a similar measure for the 2024 period. However, the lack of stability in the structure and the instability of the ground have led to the closure of the site as a safety measure.

To commemorate the tragic event and demand justice, on Saturday, February 8th, neighbors and family members of the victims will march to the building. They will reaffirm their demand for the responsible company to take responsibility and rebuild the affected apartments.

Although the construction had the appropriate permits from the City Government and had been last inspected in December by the Government Control Agency, neighbors had previously filed complaints about problems in their properties. Following the collapse, local authorities have been working with the affected to address their needs and ensure their safety.

The Government of Buenos Aires provided an exceptional subsidy to the affected individuals to cover basic needs, and the local legislature exempted the functional units of the collapsed building from certain tax payments. However, residents still cannot return to their homes until the situation of the neighboring buildings is resolved and their stability is ensured.
