Political tensions escalate as Buenos Aires officials clash over security strategies. Recent meetings reveal a shared goal to combat rising crime but differing approaches.

Tensions Rise Over Security Issues in Buenos Aires

The Security Ministers of the City of Buenos Aires and the Province of Buenos Aires, Waldo Wolff and Javier Alonso respectively, held a meeting aimed at establishing a joint security table in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires. After the meeting, there was an exchange of statements between the two officials through social media.

Alonso expressed his concern about internal political problems, insecurity aggravated by prisoner escapes, and the dirtiness of the streets in the City of Buenos Aires, stating that superficial strategies are used to mask these issues. For his part, Wolff mentioned that he presented an action plan to improve the security of the neighbors.

In the meeting, Alonso detailed the working method implemented with the Ministry of National Security and other provinces through Coordination Tables to analyze criminal information and plan joint operations. Additionally, Alonso provided Wolff with detailed information about criminal organizations and drug trafficking gangs operating in the Province and hiding in the City.

The proposal from the capital administration includes the creation of safe corridors, linking positioning systems and police phones, planning collaborative work, and establishing coordinated controls at strategic points such as General Paz and the bridges.

The meeting took place at the command center of the Bonaerense Police in La Matanza, one of the districts most affected by insecurity. The call to work together arose after a series of robberies targeting City police officers living in the suburban area, who have been victims of criminal incidents when returning home after their shifts.

The City Government highlighted that 2024 registered the lowest number of homicides in the history of Buenos Aires, however, challenges in terms of security still persist. It was noted that nearly 20,000 members of the porteno police reside in the suburban area and serve in the capital.
