The restructuring in the Federal Police of Argentina did not affect the position of Commissioner Diego Carbone, known for being responsible for the protection of former president Cristina Fernández. Since the beginning of 2024, Carbone continues to lead the Strategic Center for Operational Control and Protection of former presidents, despite the attempts by the Ministry of Security to reduce resources allocated to the security of political figures.
Carbone, who has remained close to Cristina Fernández in her judicial appearances, has been controversial due to statements where he admits to being a thief, yet he keeps his position and has even incorporated Commissioner Fernando Tejerina, promoted to senior commissioner and now part of the protection team for former presidents, including the current president of the Justicialist Party.
In the midst of the controversy, investigations have emerged pointing to possible irregularities, such as Carbone's asset increase of 700% between 2011 and 2017. The commissioner has also been mentioned in the notebooks of driver Oscar Centeno, linking him to a bodyguard of former minister Julio De Vido. Prosecutors are investigating whether the official bodyguards could be involved in a corruption scheme related to the transfer of illicit money.
Despite requests for information on possible incompatibilities in his position, security authorities have not responded. It was proposed to establish clear rules to determine the number of personnel needed for each former president, and the Military House and the Ministry of Security have been involved in this process.
Commissioner Tejerina, for his part, played a prominent role in the attack suffered by Cristina Fernández in September 2022, being one of the officers who accompanied her immediately after the attack. Despite previous attempts to cut resources for the protection of political figures, Carbone has maintained his position, and it has even been reported that the armored vehicles assigned for the security of former presidents have been relocated to a property of Cristina Kirchner.
