The subway workers' union reports an epidemic of scabies and four deaths from asbestos since 2018. The elimination of the cancer-causing material and attention to those affected are demanded.


Scabies and Asbestos Reports in the Buenos Aires Subway

Reports of scabies among workers and users of the subway continue due to lack of maintenance, while the union has expressed that, since 2018, four workers have died from cancer-causing asbestos. All cases have been recognized by the Superintendence of Occupational Risks.

Workers recently reported an outbreak of scabies in the subway, declaring a state of alert and demanding the removal of asbestos from the trains. The Union of Subway Workers announced that a worker recently died due to constant exposure to asbestos, adding to the four deaths and 107 affected since the discovery of the cancer-causing material in 2018.

In this context, Jorge Navarro, a worker from the ConstituciĆ³n Workshop, died from lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. The AGTSyP continues to fight for the complete elimination of asbestos from the Subway and Premetro, as well as for the procurement of new fleets free of this cancer-causing material. The situation also seems to be out of control regarding users affected by scabies.

The Union of Subway and Premetro Workers has confirmed the proliferation of scabies among workers of Line B of the Subway in recent weeks, highlighting the urgency of addressing the lack of maintenance and the presence of cancer-causing material in the public transport of Buenos Aires.
