The death of the elephant Kuki in Buenos Aires

One of the African elephants at the Ecopark of Buenos Aires, known as "Kuki", passed away today at the age of 31. The elephant had lived in the former city zoo since 1993, arriving in the country after losing her mother in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

"Kuki" shared her space with her companion "Pupy", who is currently still receiving care and attention from the Ecopark caregivers. The authorities of the location announced the closure of the park in the coming days as a sign of mourning for the loss of the elephant. Both animals were fed fruits, vegetables, and forages during their stay at the Ecopark.

In 2020, there were plans to relocate "Kuki" and "Pupy" to a sanctuary in Mato Grosso, Brazil, but this process was postponed several times due to logistical and economic issues. The sanctuary houses several specimens from Argentina and provides extensive habitat areas for their well-being.

The Ecopark of Buenos Aires communicated the death of "Kuki" through its social media, emphasizing that the causes of her death are still unknown. A necropsy will be performed to determine the exact circumstances of the death and clarify what happened.
