Over 50% of Argentines Have Excess Weight: Health Minister

Minister of Health Mario Lugones emphasized that "more than 50% of Argentines have excess weight." He urged the population to consume "real, nutritious, and minimally processed" foods to prevent obesity. Lugones also noted that, like Donald Trump in the United States, President Javier Milei advocates for the freedom of each individual to make informed decisions, which is why the country is moving towards updating dietary recommendations without ideological biases. "There is no doubt: the most effective and accessible strategy for non-communicable diseases is prevention," he added. According to Argentine News Agency, the official stated in a post on social media X that "obesity is a growing epidemic in the country and the world, and is associated with more than 200 non-communicable diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases." He also highlighted that "the increasing consumption of ultra-processed products, high in sugars, fats, additives, and synthetic dyes, is part of the problem. It is essential to review ingredients, improve standards, and ensure clear information about what we consume."
