Fatal Gas Poisoning in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, February 3 (NA) – Initial assessments by Metrogas of the home in Villa Devoto, where a nanny and two children died from carbon monoxide poisoning, revealed serious issues with the water heater's ventilation. Argentine News Agency confirmed this. According to preliminary information, «the ventilation of the water heater was obstructed by debris», which caused the accumulation of combustion gases inside the apartment. Following the work of Scientific Police and Fire Department experts, it was communicated that «the four-way outlet to the terrace of the apartment is in perfect working order and without obstructions». «Personnel from Metrogas who worked at the site proceeded to cut off the gas supply to the entire building until all water heater outlets in all apartments are reviewed to prevent similar incidents», they added. The incident occurred this Monday when personnel from the 11B Neighborhood Police Station of the City Police became aware of the situation around 6:00 p.m., following a 911 call from the mother of the children, aged 2 and 4, who reported that the three victims were unconscious inside a home located on Mercedes Street at 4400. The woman died at the scene, while the two minors were transferred to the Zubizarreta Hospital, where it was later confirmed that they had died. The case is being handled by the National Prosecutor's Office for Criminal and Correctional Matters No. 13, led by Marcelo Roma, and proceedings have been initiated for «investigation of the causes of death».
