Argentine Deputies and Activists Unite to Save Child Heart Surgery Program

In Argentina, 4,000 children with congenital heart defects are born each year, and 50% of these cases require high-complexity surgery for the baby to survive. The Unión por la Patria bloc met with collectives representing people with congenital heart defects to plan actions against the government's dismantling of the National Program for Congenital Heart Defects. Among other points, they agreed to summon Health Minister Mario Lugones to the Congress to explain the situation. Activists warn of total uncertainty: they do not know if their children will be able to be transferred for treatments, receive the necessary medication, or make it to the operating room. The dismissal of the three pediatric cardiologists who coordinated the program at the national level has left it without specialized leadership, causing great fear among parents. On February 1st, a federal rally will be held across the country with the slogan "Our children put their bodies in the therapies, we put our bodies in the streets".
