Volkswagen has launched a new recall campaign in Argentina targeting over 55,000 users who have yet to undergo a preventive check of the driver's airbag. The entire process—diagnosis and replacement—is free of charge. The campaign affects five models that were among the brand's best-sellers between 2011 and 2021: Suran, Fox, Gol, Saveiro, and Voyage. The issue lies with the driver's airbag inflator, which can degrade under certain conditions. In the event of a crash, this could lead to improper airbag deployment and the ejection of metal fragments, posing a risk of serious injury. Volkswagen emphasizes that safety is a priority and strongly recommends not postponing the inspection. Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by entering the chassis number on the official Volkswagen Argentina website or by booking an appointment at their preferred dealership. This campaign is linked to the well-known "Takata case", the largest recall in automotive history.
"The problem does not prevent the airbag from deploying, nor does it cause it to deploy on its own, but it can deploy defectively and cause serious injuries."
Owners of vehicles included in the recall can verify if their unit is covered by entering the chassis number on the official Volkswagen Argentina website or by directly requesting an appointment at their preferred dealership. This is a key check because it aims to fix a defect that could compromise safety in case of an accident. According to Noticias Argentinas news agency, the German automaker operating in Argentina explained that many of these vehicles were called in for repairs years ago but never made it to the dealership. It does not require leaving the car for longer than necessary for the intervention, and Volkswagen insists on completing it.
