Buenos Aires, November 24 (NA) -- In nearly a decade, 53% of the homicides of women committed with gender-based violence in the City of Buenos Aires that resulted in a conviction were classified as femicides. Those processes that exhausted all instances - including appeals to the Nation's Supreme Court - had an average duration of 7 years from the time of the fact until its completion,” highlights the report accessed by the Argentine News Agency. In the 96 guilty verdicts, sentences were established for 105 people considered authors of intentional homicides of women. This index was released in the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In the seventh edition of the monitoring report on judicial investigations for femicides, transfemicides and other intentional homicides of women in the Federal Capital, carried out by the Specialized Federal Unit for Violence against Women (UFEM), it was revealed that, between 2015 and 2024, “53% of the homicides of women in which elements of gender-based violence were observed that reached a guilty verdict were classified as femicides”. This work highlights that, during that period, there were 192 cases in which 199 homicides of women were investigated: “62% of those cases were classified as femicides, as pre-established indicators of violence for gender reasons were observed”. The year in which the most femicides occurred was in 2020, during the quarantine for the Coronavirus pandemic, because due to the restrictions, many of the victims could not call for help or escape the violence. Despite this, authorities warn that in recent times there has been an increase in crimes linked to gender-based violence. From the Fiscales portal, they indicated that, as of July 2025, there were 96 guilty verdicts and another 10 resulted in acquittals. Judicial times, penalties and aggravating factors The analysis of the judicial processes shows that between the fatal fact and the elevation to trial an average of 9 months passes, while if the oral stage is taken into account, a period of a little over 2 years (26 months) is noted. However, it is unusual for these sentences to be final at that stage, as 84% of the sentences were appealed before the National Court of Criminal Cassation, which prolongs the processing of the cases. 63% of those responsible received life imprisonment.
