Buenos Aires Intensifies Alcohol Control During Holidays

The Buenos Aires City government announced that it will deploy 30 additional alcohol control posts during the night of December 24th. This measure aims to strengthen prevention in the city's neighborhoods, where one in five traffic incidents is linked to drivers under the influence of alcohol. Throughout 2025, traffic agents conducted over 470,000 checks, with a 0.97% positivity rate. During this period, approximately 4,271 vehicles were impounded. If drivers test positive, they face a mandatory suspension of their license for a minimum of two months, and their vehicle will be towed. They must also go to the General Directorate of Administrative Infractions or the contraventional court to regularize their situation. Officers will use a "funnel method" to force drivers to slow down, clear traffic if bottlenecks form, and improve the safety of the personnel. Depending on the dosage, the following penalties apply: Between 0.5 g/l and 1 g/l: A fine of 150 to 1,000 UF (approximately $119,776.5 to $798,510) and license suspension (2 to 4 months). If the driver completes a traffic safety course, the suspension period is halved for the first offense. The vehicle is towed, and the driver's license is retained. From 1 g/l onwards: A fine of 300 to 2,000 UF (approximately $239,553 to $1,597,020) or 1 to 10 days of arrest. License suspension is always applied (4 months to 2 years). The suspension cannot be suspended.
