An image of the Virgin of Luján, located in a shrine in Liniers, was vandalized in the last few hours, after which the parish priest of the San Cayetano shrine, Lucas Arguimbau, filed a complaint. The virgin was in a plaza on the corner of Juan B. Justo and Cuzco avenues, opposite the Police Station 9 of that Buenos Aires neighborhood, and the act was perpetrated despite the presence of several security cameras in the area. The priest reported that the attack occurred during last Saturday's mass, and after the celebration, Father Arguimbau, the parish vicar Guillermo Reale, a seminarian, and three laypeople went to the scene to assess the damage. The shrine is on a small ramp with planters, under a bush. In contrast, the cross with Jesus remained intact, and the image of San Cayetano had fallen inside the oratory. The remains of the image were collected and taken to the shrine. From the parish, they informed that the recordings from nearby security cameras will be analyzed to assist with the investigation and reinforce the protection of the space. The image of the Virgin of Luján, proclaimed patroness of Argentina in 1930 by Pope Pius XI, is one of the most venerated symbols of the country. There, the religious found the front glass broken and the figure of the Virgin completely smashed on the floor.
