The Buenos Aires government, through the Ministry of Public Space and Urban Hygiene, has begun the installation of a panoramic elevator at the Obelisk in the City of Buenos Aires. This implementation aims to transform the iconic monument into a viewpoint so that both citizens and visitors can enjoy panoramic views.
The installation will occupy 160 m2 of surface area between the base, the elevator, the emergency stairs, and the viewpoint, allowing access to the 55th level of the Obelisk. Until now, accessing the summit required climbing 7 sets of stairs, limiting access. With a maximum capacity of up to 4 people, the elevator will have a bolted metal structure that will facilitate its dismantling if necessary.
The panoramic elevator will consist of three glass sides and will feature an emergency staircase around it. The works will not alter the external structure of the Obelisk but will provide a new experience for those wishing to contemplate the City from above.
In the words of local authorities: "With the installation of this panoramic elevator, the Obelisk will become a unique observation point in the City of Buenos Aires without altering its original structure". Plaza de la República, located at the intersection of 9 de Julio and Avenida Corrientes, will host this initiative aimed at enriching the tourist and cultural offerings of the Argentine capital.
