In case of loss or theft of the vehicle's license plate, it is necessary to process a duplicate license plate. The National Direction of the Automotive Property Registry (DNRPA) is the entity responsible for this process, which involves completing an application, paying the corresponding fees, and obtaining provisional license plates that allow the vehicle to circulate until the new plates are delivered.
According to DNRPA statistics, the theft of license plates has increased significantly in Argentina. In the last year (2023), there was a 21% increase in this type of crime. These stolen plates are often used to replace the license plates of stolen vehicles, in order to avoid detection by camera reading systems and police checks.
The West Zone of Buenos Aires, especially in districts like La Matanza and MorĂ³n, has been one of the most affected areas by this type of theft. So far in 2024, the figures show no improvement, as there has been a 23% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Furthermore, a study reveals that most vehicle thefts occur at gunpoint in public spaces.
In response to this situation, many insurance companies offer special coverage for the theft of license plates and provide advice during the replacement process. To process the duplicate license plate, it is recommended to start the procedure online on the DNRPA page, pay the applicable fees, and wait to be contacted by the Automotive Registry for the delivery of the new plates.
If the license plate is stolen, it is essential to file a report with the police to alert about possible fraudulent uses of the plate on stolen vehicles. This action also helps to activate legal protocols to prevent future crimes. Additionally, it is advisable to install anti-theft nuts on the plates as an extra security measure.
