IMF Cuts Argentina's Growth Forecast and Raises Inflation Projection

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has cut its growth forecasts for Argentina and increased its inflation projection, reflecting a general deterioration in the country's conditions. The organization expects GDP expansion to be 3.5%, a decrease of 0.5 percentage points from the previous estimate, according to the report verified by the Noticias Argentinas news agency. For 2027, it reaffirmed its growth projection of 4%.

Economy and Finance: Caputo warned that March inflation will exceed 3%. The IMF also expects inflation to reach 30.5%, almost double the figure calculated six months ago (16.5%). Regarding the employment situation, the agency pointed to an unemployment rate of 7.2% for the year, an increase of 0.6 percentage points.

These projections are included in the World Economic Outlook (WEO) report. Additionally, the IMF's revised estimates are close to the projections published by the Central Bank's REM at the beginning of this month. Although the IMF cut its growth projections, the country continues to maintain the most favorable forecast in the region.

The revision comes at a time when the agency weighed Argentina's economic model and its outcomes in every possible scenario. The report was presented by the IMF's Chief Economist, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, during a press conference held as part of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings. Petya Koeva Brooks, a member of the IMF team that prepared the report, attributed the deterioration of the forecasts to the decline in the Argentine economy at the end of 2025. This period coincided with the turmoil generated by the electoral process. Caputo will travel to Washington tonight to participate in this meeting, where he will seek to unblock a disbursement of US$1 billion.
