Argentine Economist: Inflation to Persist, Annual Price Growth Near 28%

Economist Orlando Ferreres stated that inflation in Argentina shows signs of persistence and would not drop below 2% monthly in the short term, while projecting that the year will close with a price increase close to 28%. In an interview with Radio Rivadavia, Ferreres noted that recent data is not just a transitory rebound. According to his explanation, private measurements place March inflation at around 3%, while his consultancy firm recorded 2.8% in the Greater Buenos Aires area. Additionally, he mentioned the high country risk and lack of confidence as obstacles to a stronger recovery, although he highlighted that there is still room for optimism if resources can be channeled towards investment and consumption. In this context, he suggested that the current scenario could be marking a higher floor than expected, rather than a sustained slowdown. The economist also warned about the deterioration of economic activity, with a sharp drop in industry, which contracted 8.7% year-over-year in February, with sectors like textiles, machinery, and automobiles being the most affected.
