Argentina Seeks IMF Financing

The economic team, led by Minister of Economy Luis Caputo and President of the Central Bank (BCRA), Santiago Bausili, arrived in Washington this week to participate in the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, with the additional objective of unblocking a disbursement of US$1,000 million. The event, which runs from April 13 to 18, will be dominated by the situation in the Middle East, but the Argentine chapter will be present in the negotiations. When accounting for interest payments on debt, the total fiscal surplus stood at 0.2% of GDP. According to official sources, the government will also seek a 'waiver' for the previous non-compliance in reserve accumulation, which was US$11,000 million below the agreed level for the previous year. The recent IMF World Economic Outlook report projects a growth of 4% for Argentina for both 2026 and 2027. Although this figure is more conservative than the 5% estimated by the government in the National Budget, it places the country above the global average growth forecast of 3.3% for the current year. In regional comparative terms, the projections for Argentina exceed those of Brazil (1.6%) and Mexico (1.5%).
