Argentina's Government to Sanction FATE Company for Mass Layoffs

The Ministry of Human Capital will sanction the company FATE, which announced its closure and the dismissal of more than 900 workers, for “failure to pay employees during mandatory conciliation,” according to a communiqué accessed by the Argentine News Agency. Additionally, in the context of the labor conflict with the Single Union of Argentine Tire Workers (SUTNA), the ministry led by Sandra Pettovello decided to extend the conciliation period, set to expire on March 11, 2026, for five days, “with the aim of continuing to promote dialogue between the parties and reach a solution.” In this context, it was detailed that the national government has initiated “the corresponding summary against the company FATE for the failure to pay the salaries corresponding to the second half of February, which constitutes a violation of the mandatory conciliation previously issued.” In recent hours, it became known that SUTNA is promoting a bill in the Buenos Aires Legislature to declare the production of the FATE tire plant of “public utility” to guarantee the continuity of the company and for the provincial government of Buenos Aires to temporarily take charge. During the day, President Javier Milei again criticized Paolo Rocca, CEO of Techint, and Javier Madanes Quintanilla, owner of FATE, whom he described as “rent-seeking entrepreneurs”.
